FAQ
How much does Shopify take per sale?
With Shopify Payments in the US, an online card payment costs 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced and 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus. Premium cards cost more (3.5% + 30¢ on Basic), international cards add 1%, and in-person card payments are 2.6% + 10¢ on Basic. Source: Shopify pricing page, checked 10 Oct 2026.
Does Shopify charge transaction fees?
Not if you use Shopify Payments. If you take payments through a third-party provider instead (for example PayPal as your main gateway, or another card processor), Shopify adds its own transaction fee on top of that provider’s fees: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.
Does Shopify charge a monthly fee as well?
Yes. The plan is billed separately from the per-sale fees: Basic $29, Grow $79 and Advanced $299 a month when billed yearly, or $39, $105 and $399 billed monthly. Plus starts at $2,300 a month. The calculator adds the plan to your monthly total and shows which plan is cheapest at your sales volume.
Are Shopify fees the same in the UK, Canada or Australia?
No. Shopify Payments rates depend on the country your store is based in. This calculator’s presets are the US rates; choose “Custom rate” and enter the percentage and fixed fee from Shopify’s pricing page for your country.
When is it worth upgrading my Shopify plan?
When the lower card rate saves more than the higher subscription costs. Break-even monthly sales = (new plan price − current plan price) ÷ (current rate − new rate). The calculator works this out for your payment method and billing period.
