Why BFCM spikes chargebacks for UK and EU stores
- Gift orders. The buyer pays, someone else receives. The cardholder never sees the parcel and disputes it as not received.
- Carrier strain. Peak-season volumes mean more late, misdelivered and "delivered" scans nobody can find. See our delivered but not received guide.
- Friendly fraud and "unrecognised" charges. Shoppers buy from many unfamiliar stores in one weekend and later don't recognise the descriptor on their statement. Shopify lists "Unrecognized" and "Fraudulent" as separate dispute reasons (Shopify Help: chargeback reasons).
- Cross-border EU orders. Visa's guide says that if goods are "delayed, held, or not released by customs", the merchant is still responsible for ensuring the cardholder receives the purchase.
When the cardholder's bank opens a chargeback, Shopify says the bank "takes the disputed amount from you right away" and "also takes a chargeback fee". An inquiry doesn't take the money or fee straight away (Shopify Help: chargebacks and inquiries). We did not find a published GBP/EUR fee figure we could verify, so check your Shopify Payments payout or your processor's fee schedule.
The Shopify response deadline
Shopify says "the deadline is typically 7 to 21 days after the chargeback is filed", and with Shopify Payments "you can submit evidence up until the due date listed on the chargeback. When the due date has passed, you can't submit further evidence. The result of the chargeback is final" (Shopify Help: resolving chargebacks). Shopify also says it automatically populates available data and sends a response on the due date, and that bank review "can take up to 30-90 days".
Practical rule for BFCM: the due date on each chargeback in Shopify admin is your real deadline. Don't plan around 21 days; some will be 7.
The evidence pack for "Product not received"
Shopify's advice: contact the customer first. If they agree to drop it, ask them to tell their bank and include evidence of that in your response. If not, submit proof they received it before the chargeback: fulfilment date and time, billing info, shipping and tracking. Shopify "will automatically upload a PDF containing all fulfillment events" (Shopify Help: chargeback reasons).
Visa's guide says a valid proof of delivery for physical goods should include:
- The full delivery address, which must match the invoice or purchase agreement;
- Delivery status details from the courier;
- It can also include a signature from the recipient and a delivery photo showing where the item was delivered;
- If possible, confirmation of receipt sent to the cardholder by email or SMS, if contact details match those given at purchase.
Add your customer chat or email thread if the buyer confirmed the gift address or acknowledged delivery. For gift orders, the delivery address must match what was entered at checkout, which is why the shipping address on the order matters.
Reason codes for "not received" (sourced only)
| Network | Code / label | What it means | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify (all networks) | "Product not received" | Customer believes they did not receive the goods or services | Shopify Help: chargeback reasons |
| Visa | 13.1 Merchandise/Services Not Received | Cardholder claims they did not receive what they paid for; you must show it was delivered, made available or used as agreed | Visa Dispute Management Guide for Merchants (October 2026), p.55 (note: the guide's contents page labels 13.1 "Invalid Data", but the section body is Not Received) |
| Visa | 10.4 Other Fraud – Card-Absent Environment | Cardholder says they didn't authorise an online purchase (common in BFCM friendly fraud) | Visa Dispute Management Guide for Merchants (October 2026) |
| Mastercard | Check your processor letter | We could not open Mastercard's chargeback guide this turn, so we don't list a code | - |
| American Express | Check your processor letter | Not verified this turn | - |
UK and EU notes
- Chargebacks are a card-scheme process run by the customer's bank, separate from a customer's statutory rights claim against you. Your evidence goes to the bank through Shopify or your processor.
- UK consumers also have statutory rights; see GOV.UK: consumer protection rights. We are not giving legal advice on how these interact with a chargeback; ask a UK adviser if a dispute turns on legal rights.
- EU cross-border: customs delays don't move responsibility off you under Visa's guide, so price in delivered-duty options for peak season.
Prevention before BFCM week vs fighting after
| Before Black Friday | After a chargeback lands |
|---|---|
| Use tracked services with photo POD or signature on high-value orders | Pull POD, delivery photo and address match the same day |
| Make your statement descriptor recognisable | Contact the buyer; many "unrecognised" cases drop once they remember |
| Review Shopify high-risk orders and cancel the bad ones (Shopify suggests this) | Submit before the due date in Shopify admin |
| Consider a network dispute-resolution / alert programme that refunds before a chargeback forms (Shopify mentions these) | Accept the ones you can't prove; fighting without POD rarely wins |
Tools when volume outgrows a checklist
Chargeblast focuses on dispute alerts so you can refund before an inquiry turns into a chargeback (and a fee). Useful when BFCM volume spikes.

Chargeback.io automates chargeback responses and alerts for Shopify stores.

Disputifier is another Shopify chargeback-automation option.

Many chargebacks start as a "where is my parcel" claim. Claimify, our own Shopify app, logs not-received, lost and damaged claims with photos and outcomes so you have the record before a bank asks. Selling on TikTok too? See TikTok Shop item not received for sellers.

Who should skip the tools
- Low volume: a few disputes a season is a checklist job: due date, POD, submit.
- Stores already in a network dispute-resolution programme via Shopify may get most disputes refunded automatically.
- Digital-only stores: the delivery-proof parts here don't apply; you need access logs.
Verdict
Treat every BFCM chargeback as a dated job: read the reason, contact the buyer, build a pack with address-matched POD and photo, and submit before the due date in Shopify (typically 7-21 days). For volume, add dispute alerts (Chargeblast) or automation (Chargeback.io), and log not-received claims early (Claimify). Not legal advice.
