Offboarded, denied, out of pocket: the last 12 months
Route received 14 one- and two-star reviews on the Shopify App Store between October 2025 and September 2026, and 13 of them have text. We read each one and tagged it by hand. 9 of the 13 complain about at least one of these:
| Complaint | Reviews, Oct 2025 – Sep 2026 |
|---|---|
| Offboarded by Route over claim costs or profitability | 3 |
| Refused service below 1,000 orders a month | 1 |
| Claim refused, or no way to file one | 3 |
| Billing, rates or fees | 4 |
| At least one of the above | 9 of 13 |

Offboarded, sometimes overnight
“Unfortunately, the cost of claims has significantly outweighed the revenue generated through premiums, making it unsustainable for us to continue.”
“While they honored coverage for existing customers, there was no notice or transition period.”
“refuse to add Route to our store again until we reach 1000 shipped orders a month on a normal basis.”
Three stores say Route ended their service over the cost of their claims or profitability; a fourth was refused when it tried to reinstall. If your checkout, policies and customer emails are built around one protection provider, losing it overnight means rewriting all three.
Claim refused, or no way to file one
“Route then would NOT honor the protection after order was damaged.”
“Recently, they did not assist us with a lost package, and we have decided we will be taking our business elsewhere.”
“We have had no access to the features to file claims, our customers were unable to file claims on their own”
When the protection provider says no, the customer still expects a replacement, and it comes from you. Older reviews spell it out:
“Out of pocket”, in merchants’ words
“if a customer files a legitimate claim and is denied by Route, the merchant is out of pocket for the replacement.”
“we wait sometimes months for reimbursements so we are out of pocket for long periods.”
“We never had a claim denied during our time with Route, which was reassuring.”
The two “out of pocket” quotes are from April 2023 (a third review, from May 2021, says the same), so they show the risk rather than Route’s current claims rate. Not every store had claims trouble, as the last quote shows.
What to do instead: the common thread is that someone else approves the claim and can end the cover. With a merchant-run guarantee, you set the policy and decide each claim. SHIPAID affiliate link describes itself on the App Store as a way to “Manage lost, damaged, or missing orders from your dashboard while maintaining ownership of post-purchase policies”, and the listing shows a single fee: 9% of the guarantee revenue earned through the app. Claimify Our own app then gives customers a branded portal to file the claim, and you one dashboard to approve it and send a replacement or refund. Neither is an insurer: when you approve a claim, you pay for the replacement, out of the guarantee fees customers paid at checkout. Check whether that works at your loss rate in the shipping protection calculator before you switch.

Head to head: Route vs SHIPAID: who should pick which →
Each complaint, and what fixes it
1. Slow or unreachable support (44 of 87 reviews)
“The customer service has gone downhill fast.”
“They promise fast replies and resolutions, but every time we need a reimbursed claim, I have to chase them down.”
What fixes it: Keep claims in your own hands. Claimify Our own app gives customers a branded self-service portal to file a claim, and every request lands on one dashboard you work from the Shopify admin, so no third party sits between you and your customer. SHIPAID’s listing describes the same idea for shipping protection: you manage lost, damaged or missing orders from your own dashboard.
2. Claims denied, slow or unpaid (39 of 87 reviews)
“They charge customers a significant amount for package insurance, yet when it comes time to file a claim, they become unhelpful.”
“They did end up paying the claims they owed after it was all said and done with though.”
What fixes it: With Claimify Our own app you set the rules: claim forms, claim reasons, validation rules and, from the Plus plan, auto-approval rules, so customers know what to send and you decide. Pair it with a merchant-run guarantee such as SHIPAID affiliate link, where you resolve the claim yourself instead of waiting on an insurer.
3. Billing and rising rates (31 of 87 reviews)
“They raised rates on us and don't cover the order AFTER the order was placed and BEFORE it was processed.”
“The first month we get the bill, and our credit card is overcharged by approximately $250.”
What fixes it: Pick a model whose price is written down. SHIPAID affiliate link lists a single fee on the App Store: 9% of the shipping-guarantee revenue earned through the app, no monthly fee. CWILL (ParcelWILL) affiliate link includes shipping protection in its Essential plan ($11/month). Run your own numbers in the shipping protection calculator before you switch.
4. Checkout and cart problems (18 of 87 reviews)
“During this process, the widget broke my checkout button.”
“A change in their code messed up our checkout and our customers could not check out.”
What fixes it: No app can promise a widget will never clash with your theme, ours included. Whatever you install, add it to a duplicate theme first, place a test order on mobile and desktop, and check that customers can remove the protection line from the cart.
5. Accounts ended after claims (3 of 87 reviews)
“We woke up to an email that Route was offboarding us immediately due to profitability concerns.”
“100 order and 2 needed to be paid out and they end the service with us.”
What fixes it: If a third party can end coverage, you carry that risk. Self-insuring with a merchant-run guarantee (SHIPAID affiliate link) plus claims handled in Claimify Our own app means the protection fees and the claim decisions stay with you. The calculator shows whether that pays at your loss rate.

Ratings, review counts and prices from each app’s Shopify App Store listing, checked 14 Oct 2026. Claimify has only 6 reviews so far, so its rating says little yet. Claimify is not an insurer: it organises and resolves claims; pair it with a guarantee or self-insure. Listings: Route, Claimify, SHIPAID, CWILL.
