Why the cutoff matters more than the sale
- BFCM orders turn into gift orders. A buyer on 27 November thinks they have plenty of time. A buyer on 20 December, using your slowest service, doesn't.
- Carrier dates are send-by dates, not order-by dates. Your order cutoff = carrier date minus your pick-pack time minus a buffer.
- Late = WISMO, then disputes. Late gifts lead to "item not received" claims and chargebacks. See Black Friday chargebacks (UK) and delivered but not received.
- Carriers stretch transit times at peak. UPS says some Ground packages need extra days from 16 Nov 2026 to 8 Jan 2027 (UPS 2026 Holiday Schedule). USPS says actual delivery "may vary" (USPS 2026 Holiday Shipping Deadlines).

USPS dates are for the lower 48 states, for delivery before 25 December. UPS and FedEx dates are for arrival by 24 December.

Not published or not verified this turn: DHL Express Christmas cutoffs (US, UK and global), the UPS air date grid (it's in the PDF but we couldn't read it), the FedEx US domestic air grid (it's in the PDF but we couldn't read it), and Evri, DPD and Yodel UK. Set the store policy, then the banner
- For each service you offer, take the carrier date above and subtract your real pick-pack time plus a 1-day buffer. That's your order-by date.
- Put the order-by dates on your shipping policy page and in the cart or checkout.
- After each order-by date passes, drop that service's "by Christmas" promise. Offer an upgrade or a gift card instead.

Already late? Handle WISMO and claims

- Digital or gift-card-only stores: no carrier cutoff applies.
- Local delivery or pickup only: set your own cutoffs.
- Made-to-order with long lead times: your production deadline comes well before any carrier date. Set that first.
- Stores on carriers not listed here: check that carrier's own page.
Verdict
Take the official carrier date for each service you offer, subtract pick-pack time and a buffer, and publish that as your order-by date. Switch off "arrives by Christmas" once it passes. In the US, USPS Ground Advantage is the earliest domestic date (17 Dec). In the UK, Royal Mail 2nd Class is the earliest (18 Dec).
