Why WISMO tickets spike in BFCM week
- Tracking goes quiet. A label is created, then the parcel sits in a peak-season queue. To the shopper, "no update" reads as "lost".
- More orders, same team. The question is identical across hundreds of tickets, but if each one is answered by hand, reply times stretch from hours to days.
- Gift deadlines. As Christmas cutoffs approach (USPS lists Ground Advantage send-by 17 Dec and Priority Mail 18 Dec for the lower 48 in 2026, per USPS 2026 holiday shipping deadlines), anxious buyers write in earlier and more often.
- Slow replies escalate. A shopper who gets no answer is more likely to ask for a refund, open a marketplace "not received" case, or file a card dispute. See Black Friday chargebacks.
We don't quote an industry "X% of tickets are WISMO" figure here: we did not find a named public source with methodology we could open today. Check your own helpdesk tags from last November instead; that's the number that matters for staffing.
Pre-BFCM checklist (do this before 27 Nov)
- Publish honest cutoffs and ETAs. Put carrier send-by dates on product pages and in your banner. See Christmas shipping cutoff dates 2026 and holiday shipping cutoff banner for Shopify. Pad your processing time for peak week rather than promising normal speed.
- Check Shopify's shipping notifications are on and branded. Shopify lists Shipping confirmation (sent when an order is fulfilled), Shipping update (when tracking information is updated), Out for delivery and Delivered notifications (Shopify Help: setting up customer notifications). Make sure your fulfilment app adds tracking numbers so those updates actually fire.
- Make the order status page useful. Shopify's checkout and accounts editor lets you brand the thank-you and order status pages and add eligible apps to them on Basic plan and higher (Shopify Help: customizing checkout and order status pages). Add your peak-season ETA note there.
- Write your WISMO macros now: shipped, not shipped yet, no order found, delivered-not-received. Gorgias publishes templates for exactly these cases (Gorgias docs: macro templates).
- Cross-border orders? Customs can add days; if you ship US-bound from abroad, read the de minimis change for dropshippers and set ETAs accordingly.
The deflection stack
1. Branded tracking page (Track123)
A tracking page on your own domain keeps the shopper on your store instead of a carrier site that shows a cryptic scan. Track123 says it integrates with 1,700+ carriers and positions its Shopify order tracking for brands to "reduce WISMO inquiries by embedding real-time tracking into your storefront and post-purchase communications" (vendor claim, checked 5 Nov 2026). Link the page from your shipping emails, footer and help centre.

2. Proactive emails and SMS
Turn on Shopify's shipping update, out-for-delivery and delivered notifications (Shopify Help: setting up customer notifications), and add one honest line: "Peak-season carriers are running slower; your tracking may not update for 1-2 days." The goal is to answer the question before it's asked. If a parcel has had no scan for several days, message the customer first.
3. Helpdesk macros and rules (Gorgias)
Gorgias describes pairing a WISMO rule with a macro so the reply fills in the order number and tracking URL from Shopify automatically, using intent detection to spot the question (Gorgias: Rules; Gorgias: Macros). Its Order Management / Track Order option lets Shopify shoppers check order status, tracking number and shipping information themselves in the help centre or chat, and Gorgias recommends using the Track Order message to remind shoppers of expected shipping timeframes (Gorgias docs: Track Order option). Gorgias notes the Order Management portal needs Gorgias Chat, Shopify as the backend, and an Automate subscription.

Stuck parcel: wait, reship or refund?
| Situation | Usually | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking moving, just slow | Wait, send a macro with the tracking link | Reshipping now risks two parcels arriving |
| No scan for many days in peak week | Open a carrier trace, tell the customer the date you'll decide | A clear date stops repeat tickets |
| Carrier confirms lost, or the gift deadline will be missed | Reship (or refund if out of stock) | Cheaper than a dispute plus fee |
| Marked delivered, customer says no | Follow the delivered-but-not-received steps | Neighbour/safe-place checks first; keep POD |
Shipping protection moves the reship cost off your margin. ShipAid sells a branded shipping guarantee with automated resolution workflows and a customer portal for delivery issues (vendor description, checked 5 Nov 2026). It's most useful when lost-in-transit claims are a real line item for you in peak season.

When WISMO becomes INR or a chargeback
- Card dispute filed: the deadline on the chargeback in Shopify admin is your real clock; build the proof-of-delivery pack. See Black Friday chargebacks (UK).
- TikTok Shop "item not received": different clock and evidence rules; see TikTok Shop item not received for sellers.
- Tag every escalated WISMO ticket so you can see after BFCM which carrier or product line caused the disputes.
Who should skip the tools
- Low volume: if BFCM brings a few dozen orders, Shopify's built-in notifications plus a saved reply in your email are enough.
- Already on a helpdesk with macros and Shopify data: build the rule and macros there instead of switching in November.
- Local delivery or pickup only: a tracking page adds little; a pickup-ready SMS does the job.
- Low-value, cheap-to-reship items: shipping protection may cost more than just reshipping the occasional loss.
Verdict
Cut WISMO before it starts: honest cutoffs and ETAs, Shopify shipping update notifications on, a branded tracking page (Track123), and WISMO rules plus macros that auto-reply with the tracking link (Gorgias). For parcels that really are stuck, decide on a date, then reship or refund before it becomes a dispute; protection (ShipAid) can cover the reship cost. Not legal advice.
