The map: pain → Editions → gap
| Your BFCM pain | What Fall '26 Editions adds | The gap that's left |
|---|---|---|
| Midnight launches; sale prices left live in December | Rollouts that bundle theme, checkout, catalogs and discounts; catalog prices that roll back automatically | Section-level banners, notices and per-product publish/tags on a timer; check your plan has the rollout features |
| "Product not received" chargebacks | Shopify Protect: AI dispute replies, auto-attached carrier proof of delivery, FedEx delivery photos on the order | The customer conversation before it becomes a chargeback; non-Shopify Payments stores |
| January returns and claims flood | Return/cancellation rules and return windows by market; control who can request returns per market | Damage, warranty and gift-recipient claims that aren't a simple return |
Pain 1: "I'm up at midnight flipping the sale on, and it's still on in December"
What merchants need done: the BF theme, prices, discount and banners go live together at 00:00 store time, switch for Cyber Monday (30 Nov), and come back down without anyone remembering to.
What Editions changes: Shopify says you can now "create and schedule launches, events, or experiments that include your theme, checkout configuration, catalogs, and discounts all as one rollout", "schedule changes to prices and product publishing as catalogs, roll them out across markets, then roll back automatically when the promotion ends", and roll out discounts alongside theme and checkout changes. That's a real fix: if it's available on your plan, use it first, it's free. Test a dummy rollout on one product this week, not on 26 Nov.
The gaps: rollouts work at the theme/catalog level. Merchants still ask for: one hero or countdown block to appear and disappear without swapping the whole theme (and losing edits made meanwhile); product-level jobs like tagging items into a "Black Friday" collection and untagging after; and a holiday cut-off or "sale extended" bar with its own start and stop.
- Maestro Theme Scheduler: publishes a theme or shows/hides sections and blocks at set times, on any plan, from $9.99/month. Good when rollouts aren't on your plan or you just need blocks to switch.
- Maestro Products Scheduler: schedules price changes and their end, publish/draft, tags and collections per product, from $4.99/month.
- Quick Notice: announcement bars with start/stop scheduling and templates for promos and shipping cut-offs; free for one notice, Plus $9/month.

Pain 2: "It says delivered, they say it never arrived, and the bank sided with them"
What merchants need done: win "product not received" disputes without spending an evening on each one, and stop the ones that never needed to become disputes.
What Editions changes: Shopify Protect blocks high-risk orders before authorization, provides card/receipt/authentication data on unauthorized chargebacks, automatically attaches carrier proof of delivery when a customer says the order didn't arrive, writes AI responses per bank and reason code, and lets you write and backtest fraud rules. FedEx delivery photos now show on the order. Shopify claims 60% more "product not received" disputes won. Some Protect features are "rolling out soon", so check your admin before relying on them. If you're on Shopify Payments, this is the free first line.
The gaps: Protect fights the dispute after the bank is involved. The cheaper win is catching "where is it / it's broken" before the customer calls their bank: one place to file a claim, ask for photos, and offer a reship or refund fast. Stores on third-party gateways may also still want a dedicated chargeback tool (see delivered but not received).
Claimify gives customers one branded claim form (photos, order details, your reasons) and every claim on one board, with workflows for refunds, store credit and replacements. $9, $19 or $49/month, 3-day trial.

Pain 3: "Different countries, different return rules, and January is chaos"
What merchants need done: a longer holiday return window, different rules where law or shipping cost differs, and a way to handle what comes back after Christmas.
What Editions changes: return and cancellation rules by market, including return window overrides for products and collections, and control over whether customers can request returns and cancellations per market in the checkout editor. US return shipping fees now include taxes automatically. Set these before BFCM orders come in; rules apply to future orders.
The gap: rules decide who may return what. They don't handle the gift recipient with no order number, transit damage, or warranty claims that land on 26 December. That's where a claims board helps; see our post-holiday claims guide.

Also changing (no app needed)
- Agentic commerce: Shopify Catalog products can be discovered in AI chats (ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and others), with Shop Pay checkout in more agents and selling in Google AI Mode. Check whether your store is eligible for Shopify Catalog and approve the business facts (policies, FAQs) agents see. Make sure your holiday return policy there is current.
- Sidekick + Canvas: Sidekick can stage multiple changes at once (e.g. editing descriptions across a collection) and Canvas edits the whole store in one view. Useful for BFCM prep; review each staged change before approving.
- Black Friday email: a pre-built BFCM campaign you can schedule in Shopify Messaging.
- Checkout custom fields for gift messages and delivery notes ("rolling out soon").
Who should skip the apps
- If Rollouts with automatic rollback covers your whole sale on your plan, you may need none of the scheduling apps.
- If you're on Shopify Payments and disputes are your main issue, start with Shopify Protect.
- If post-holiday volume is plain change-of-mind returns, market-level return rules plus self-serve returns are free.
Verdict
Before Black Friday: build and test one rollout with automatic rollback, set return rules per market, and turn on what Shopify Protect offers you. Then fill only the gaps you still feel: blocks and notices that need their own timer (Maestro Themes, Quick Notice), product-level price/tag schedules (Maestro Products), and a single claims inbox for the January wave (Claimify).
